A severe shortage of critical resources prevents the Evaton library from serving the community’s needs.
Oversight Visit to Evaton Library
During a recent oversight visit to the Evaton library, it emerged that the library lacks much of the resources needed to be operational.
This resources includes no working public Internet connection at the kiosk for over a year, no computers in the computer room and partly delivered library furniture which was ordered and paid for in full.
Department of Sports, Recreation, Art and Culture
In the 2014/15 annual report of the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture it stated that one of the biggest challenges was that not all Gauteng libraries were equipped with ICT services for public access, and insufficient bandwidth in certain areas.
To date, Evaton library has not been equipped with any ICT equipment.
Lack of ICT Equipment
Failing to provide the required resources unnecessarily inconveniences students and school learners needing access to E-Books and supplementary research repositories.
The DA will raise this matter in the Gauteng Legislature’s portfolio committee and ensure that learners are given every opportunity to bridge the digital divide.
