Horrifying rape at Lenasia Clinic

I am horrified at the reported rape yesterday of an 18-year-old woman at the Lenasia South Clinic.

According to the police, she went to the toilet and was raped there by an unknown man who then ran away.

A full investigation is needed into this terrible incident which highlights criminality that has no boundaries whatsoever in perpetrating a heinous deed in a place of healing.

There have been other rapes in hospitals but usually at night or over a weekend.

We need to know how a security lapse occurred at this clinic which is guarded by a security company that is paid more than R6 million a year.

The security cameras should assist in identifying the perpetrator.

I hope that the police apprehend the rapist as soon as possible.

Only 191 Fillings For 8608 Dental Patients At Lenasia Clinic

Lenasia Clinic

The Lenasia Clinic in Nirvana Road, Lenasia saw 8608 dental patients last year but only did 191 fillings because of non-functioning suction on the dental chairs.

This was disclosed by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu in an oral reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

According to Mahlangu, the low water pressure in the area meant that there was no suction function on the chairs and mobile suction units had to be used instead. A new dental chair had been bought in July last year but could not be used because it tripped the electricity supply at the clinic.

Dental Fillings

The Department of Infrastructure Development would attend to these problems in the new financial year which starts in April. Mahlangu also said that patients who need fillings could go to other clinics or to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

I think that it is unacceptable that dental patients at this clinic are not given the option of fillings because of broken machinery. Many teeth that could have been saved are yanked out instead.

I have visited the clinic twice and I saw that the two mobile suction machines are also broken, contrary to what is said by the MEC. This is why so few fillings are being done there. I was told that not a single filling had been done since October last year.

The MEC should not delay in fixing the facilities at this clinic so that it can provide a full dental service to local residents.

Dentist Chairs Broken For Three Years At Lenasia Clinic

I am astonished that the three dentist chairs at the Lenasia Clinic in Extension 13 have been broken for three years.

I discovered this yesterday when I visited the clinic after receiving a complaint from an elderly patient that dental fillings are not done there as there is a problem with the dental chairs.

He was told to go to Lenasia South clinic which is 10 kilometres away and he cannot afford the transport as he is a pensioner.

Only one of the chairs can be adjusted for height and is used for tooth extractions only.

None of the chairs can be used for tooth fillings as there are no suction pipes.

This disgraceful situation has lasted for three years as the Gauteng Health Department has failed repeatedly to fix the chairs.

I saw a brand new dental chair that was delivered in November last year but has not been used because it is not functional.

This is incompetence of the highest order. Can you imagine a private dentist only doing extractions because his equipment doesn’t work?

Local patients are highly inconvenienced by having to go to Lenasia South clinic for fillings where there is a two month wait for an appointment.

I have requested Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu to get the chairs fixed as soon as possible.
