Provincial Executive must act against corruption in Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport

At a meeting of the Gauteng Provincial Executive Council last week, strong concerns were registered about corruption in the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and its entity, G-fleet.

It has been common knowledge amongst Transport Portfolio Committee members, and the public at large, that corruption is the order of the day at numerous testing centres across the province. Evidence of this has been forwarded to the Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi on a continuous basis – with many empty promises made of action to be taken against individuals who brazenly solicit bribes.

The Gauteng Legislature’s Transport Portfolio Committee has been pushing for an investigation into the running of G-fleet which has been dysfunctional for years. This is in conjunction with the evidence of corruption which has now been presented to the Provincial Executive Council.

The concerns expressed about corruption and mismanagement within the Department of Roads and Transport have been on the table for many years without any action being taken. The Provincial Executive Council’s concerns may just be the wake-up call the DA and other parties have been urging for.

MEC Vadi can no longer escape his responsibility to take action against those who are abusing the system for their own gain. The ball is now squarely in his court.

Another Gun To The Public’s Head: First CPS Now Tasima

Tasima, the company responsible for the development of the e-Natis system, is now refusing to hand over the system to the Department of Transport, despite a Constitutional Court order, unless an exorbitant payment is made.

For the second time in a few short months, government has been painted into a corner by organisations rendering essential services to the public, both of whom have been found to have obtained contracts illegally by the Constitutional Court.

Like the chaotic situation at the Department of Social Development, which threatened the payment of grants to millions of beneficiaries, Tasima’s brazen defiance of a court order threatens the entire vehicle registration system. Although a last minute payment to Telkom has temporarily avoided licencing chaos, a permanent solution is essential.

Gauteng which has the largest number of vehicles of any Province, will be plunged into chaos with far reaching consequences.

South Africans have had enough of blackmail by service providers who have been given space by lax and corrupt officials.

DA Debates Freedom Day

Note to editors: The following speeches were delivered in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature today by the DA Gauteng Caucus Leader, John Moodey MPL and DA Spokesperson on Economic Development, Ashor Sarupen MPL, during a debate on Freedom Day.

Speech by: John Moodey MPL

“Millions jobless despite 22 years of freedom”

  • 22 years of the peoples’ choice in government and the best constitution in the world yet far too many of our people are still struggling.
  • Millions of South Africans are still in chains and denied their dignity and are robbed of a brighter future.
  • 22 years on yet far too many of our people will remain oppressed by unemployment and poverty – they are denied quality basic services, their future remains bleak because of corruption and self-enrichment by those in authority.

“The DA embodies the values of uTata Madiba”

  • On the 27th of April 1994, we as a nation cast off our shackles, our prejudices, forgave each other, and, for the first time, elected a government on the basis of one person, one vote.
  • Using stereotypes to discredit people is wrong.
  • Verwoerd’s dream was to box people in on identity politics. To say that if you are Indian, or black, or coloured you live only in certain areas, practice certain religions, sound only a certain way with a certain language and can only attain a certain level of education was his dream – and it was wrong. It was evil.
