DA to assess the state of the asbestos infrastructure at Oakdale Secondary School

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 October 2022, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho MPL and the DA Joburg PR Councillor, Nakita Dellwaria, will conduct an oversight inspection at Oakdale Secondary School in Ennerdale.

The purpose of the oversight inspection is to assess the state of the school infrastructure and the environment in which learning, and teaching is taking place.

The DA has received complaints about learners being taught in asbestos classrooms. It has also been reported that one classroom burnt down two weeks ago.

It is unacceptable that learners and teachers are exposed to asbestos infrastructure as it poses a safety and health risk.

The DA will engage with the school management and the School Governing Body (SGB) to ascertain the infrastructure challenges that the school is faced on a daily basis.

We will demand the department’s urgent intervention to eradicate the asbestos infrastructure and ensure that this school is built with a brick-and-mortar school.

Members of the media are invited and there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

Details of the oversight inspections are as follows:

Date: 26 October 2022
Time: 10:00 to 11:00 am
Venue: Oakdale Secondary School, 1454, Skelton Road, Ext 5, Ennerdale, Johannesburg
