Bara CEO Moved 10 Months Before End Of Contract

Dr Sandile Mfenyana

Dr Sandile Mfenyana, the former CEO of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, was moved to the Gauteng Health Department head office ten months before his contract expired despite his performance being assessed as satisfactory.

This information was disclosed by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu in a written response to my questions in the Gauteng legislature.

According to Mahlangu, he did not apply for a new position but was seconded to the head office on 1 March this year to strengthen district clinical services.

New Appointment

I am puzzled by this as he was removed from the hospital on 1 January this year with no explanation given to staff although his contract runs to 30 October 2016.

I think that the real reason for his involuntary removal is being covered up.

The MEC admits that his assessed performance as CEO was satisfactory and that his contract was extended from 30 April last year when it was supposed to expire.

It is unacceptable that the CEO of our largest hospital is removed without explanation. What is being hidden by the MEC’s refusal to give a rational reason for his removal?

A permanent CEO needs to be appointed at the hospital as soon as possible to ensure effective management.
