The office of the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) has published its annual review of local municipalities, covering audit results for the 2021/22 financial year. The report shows that DA-run governments by far outperform the rest, with the Drakenstein Municipality coming out on top, as the best-run secondary city in the country.

The report sadly shows a continued decline in the financial health of South Africa’s municipalities, with the vast majority (85%) not receiving clean audits. Only 15% of the 257 municipalities in South Africa achieved a clean audit.

The AGSA lists 33 municipalities in the country that have managed to achieve consecutive clean audits, of which the majority are in the Western Cape.

The North-West have no municipalities ranked, and for the sixth consecutive year, municipalities in the Free State have not received a single clean audit.

The DA in Drakenstein applauds the DA-run Drakenstein municipality for their commitment to clean governance and delivering services to all communities. This is reflected in its recently adopted 2023/24 budget which aims to enable an economic environment that creates jobs, uplifts the poor and builds on a record excellent service delivery.
