The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) is deeply concerned about the outbreak of campus violence at TUT Soshanguve in Pretoria. The campus violence follows allegations of alleged voting irregularities in the outcome of the recent SRC election.

The ongoing campus violence has sadly resulted in the tragic death of one student, after the police allegedly fired shots at a group of students.

DASO extends our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends and the entire student fraternity.

We will now proceed to write to the  Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and Police Minister Bheki Cele to urgently investigate why the police used live ammunition on the group students.

We condemn this use of force. It is paramount that law enforcement and private security act with restraint in volatile environments.

DASO also calls on the University’s Management and all Student Leaders contesting elections to urgently meet, in order to end the ongoing campus violence, restore order and any further loss of life.

Any suggestion of election rigging must be investigated in the interest of upholding the will of students and safeguarding democratic processes.

DASO will continue to work to mediate an amicable and democratic solution.

As DASO we believe in building one TUT for all where the students come first.
